Description
This questionnaire includes up to 135 self-administered items from the International Cannabis Policy Study Survey, Wave 6 (2023). Respondents are first asked to identify which cannabis products they have used in the past 12 months (e.g., dried herb, edibles, concentrates). For each product endorsed, follow-up questions capture frequency of use, usual amount used, and levels of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
For each of the cannabis products listed below, the questions enable calculation of standard milligrams (mg) of THC and CBD used by the respondent, which can then be used to estimate the number of standard THC units (e.g., 5 mg THC) (see “Specific Instructions” and “General References”).
Specific Instructions
When there is a specific interest in assessing medical cannabis use, the PhenX Substance Use and Recovery Working Group (WG) recommends replacing “marijuana” with “medical cannabis” to specifically capture use of products for medical use. When there is an interest in capturing a broader range of cannabis products, the WG recommends considering replacing “marijuana” with “cannabis”.
In the International Cannabis Policy Study (ICPS), Wave 6 (2023), respondents are only asked these questions if they answer the USE.RECENT question with a 2 (used marijuana more than 3 months ago but less than 12 months ago), 3 (used marijuana more than 30 days ago, but less than 3 months ago), or 4 (used marijuana within the past 30 days). If investigators wish to include this introductory question, it can be accessed in the General Marijuana Use protocol.
Protocols may include terms and language that could be triggering to respondents. Investigators are encouraged to have resources in place to help respondents cope with triggers as needed.
Terminology related to substances, substance use, and recovery is fluid. Updates in protocol language may be appropriate based on circumstance. Suggestions for revision have been offered to update answer responses or other components of the questionnaires to account for the constantly changing landscape. These suggestions have not been tested or validated in research studies but may be considered by investigators to enhance relevance.
The Substance Use and Recovery WG notes that researchers may want to administer only the subset of questions relevant to a particular substance.
Average Milligrams THC or CBD used per Day.
For each of the Cannabis Products listed below, the questions enable calculation of standard milligrams (mg) of THC and CBD used by the respondent, which can then be used to estimate the number of standard THC units (e.g., 5 mg THC). An example calculation for average milligrams of THC per day for Tinctures is given below.
Example calculations for average milligrams THC used per day for Tinctures
If respondent reports average daily use of tinctures in milliliters (question 122 or 124) and reports THC concentration in mg/mL (question 129):
- Average number of milliliters (mL) tincture used per day (question 122 or 124) X mg THC /mL (question 129) = average mg THC / day
If respondent reports average daily use of tinctures in milliliters (question 122 or 124) and reports THC concentration in percent (question 129):
- Average number of milliliters (mL) tincture used per day (question 122 or 124) X 1000 mg/mL X percent THC (question 129) = average mg THC / day
If respondent reports average daily use of tinctures in ounces (question 122 or 124) and reports THC concentration in mg/mL (question 129):
- Average number of ounces (oz) tincture used per day (question 122 or 124) X 1 mL/0.03 oz (conversion factor) X mg THC/mL (question 129) = average mg THC / day
If respondent reports average daily use of tinctures in ounces (question 122 or 124) and reports THC concentration in percent (question 129):
- Average number of ounces (oz) tincture used per day (question 122 or 124) X 1 mL/0.03 oz (conversion factor) X 1000 mg/mL X percent THC (question 129) = average mg THC / day
If respondent reports average daily use of tinctures in drops (question 122 or 124) and reports THC concentration in mg/mL (question 129):
- Average number of drops tincture used per day (question 122 or 124) X 1 mL/20 drops (conversion factor) X mg THC/mL (question 129) = average mg THC / day
If respondent reports average daily use of tinctures in drops (question 122 or 124) and reports THC concentration in percent (question 129):
- Average number of drops tincture used per day (question 122 or 124) X 1 mL/20 drops (conversion factor) X 1000 mg/mL X percent THC (question 129) = average mg THC / day
Average milligrams of THC and CBD used per day for Smokeable Cannabis Products
The Substance Use and Recovery WG notes that investigators who want to calculate mg THC (and standard THC units) from cannabis products that are smoked (e.g., dried herb, oils for vaping, hash, etc.) should review Budney et al. (2022) and related references (see “General References”) for a discussion of method of administration efficiency constant (MEAC) needed to account for loss (e.g., side smoke, heating method, filtering, etc.) and a constant for amount of product consumed in each “hit.”
