Protocol - Expectancies for Medical Cannabis Use

Add to My Toolkit
Description

The Cannabis Effects Expectancy Questionnaire–Medical (CEEQ-M) is a self-administered, 21-item questionnaire that assesses what expectations people have for the use of cannabis for medical symptoms. The CEEQ-M is the first longitudinally validated instrument of its kind, providing insights into how prior beliefs about cannabis may influence its effects on target symptoms.

Specific Instructions

The PhenX Substance Use and Recovery Working Group (WG) notes that these questions could be asked separately for “high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)” and “high cannabidiol (CBD)” cannabis.

From Weiss et al. 2023 (see “Source”): “The original version of this instrument used the term ‘marijuana’ instead of ‘cannabis’ the latter of which we suggest as the more appropriate term for future administration of this instrument, as shown here.”

Protocols may include terms and language that could be triggering to respondents. Investigators are encouraged to have resources in place to help respondents cope with triggers as needed.

Terminology related to substances, substance use, and recovery is fluid. Updates in protocol language may be appropriate based on circumstance. Suggestions for revision have been offered to update answer responses or other components of the questionnaires to account for the constantly changing landscape. These suggestions have not been tested or validated in research studies but may be considered by investigators to enhance relevance.

The Substance Use and Recovery WG notes that items can be assessed separately for THC and CBD products.
