Protocol - Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale (YBC-EDS)

Add to My Toolkit
Description

The Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale (YBC-EDS) is an interviewer-administered scale that includes a comprehensive checklist of 21 preoccupations and 44 rituals involving food, eating, weight, shape and appearance, clothing, hoarding food, and exercise. This total number of possible symptoms is organized into 16 symptom categories based on thematic concerns. The checklist applies to two periods: current and worst. After completing the preoccupations checklist, the rater asks each preoccupation and ritual follow-up question for current (past month) then worst. Follow-up questions are scored from 0 to 4.

Specific Instructions

The Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale (YBC-EDS) is available from Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure at Yale University: carolyn.mazure@yale.edu

Availability

This protocol is freely available; permission not required for use.

Protocol

The Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale (YBC-EDS) is an interviewer-administered scale that can assess an individuals unique symptoms within the wide range of eating-related preoccupations and behaviors found with eating disorders. It provides an 16-item standardized measure of the severity of symptom impairment, as well as measurements of desire for change, global severity, and global change over time. Inter-rater reliability, validity, and internal consistency have been demonstrated.

The Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale (YBC-EDS) is available from Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure:

Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews. The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.

Equipment Needs

The PhenX Working Group acknowledges these questions can be administered in a computerized or noncomputerized format (i.e., paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer/handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.
