Substance Use and Recovery Working Group (2025)
In September 2023, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded an administrative supplement to PhenX to identify measurement protocols for substance use (medical cannabis and polysubstance use) and substance use recovery for inclusion in the PhenX (consensus measures for Phenotypes and eXposures) Toolkit (www.phenxtoolkit.org). Secondary areas of focus included identification of updates to language and imagery to address stigma (e.g., “abuse”).
The PhenX Substance Use and Recovery Working Group added 30 protocols to the existing Substance Use, Use Disorders, and Recovery (SUR) collections and was composed of nine scientists with expertise in the designated areas:
- Yuh-Pey Anne Buu, PhD (Co-chair), University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
- John Kelly, PhD (Co-chair), Harvard Medical School
- Amanda Bunting, PhD, New York University, Langone Health
- Christian Hopfer, MD, University of Colorado Denver
- Ryan McNeil, PhD, Yale University
- Johannes Thrul, PhD, Johns Hopkins University
- Denis Vidot, PhD, University of Miami

PhenX Substance Use and Recovery Working Group Responsibilities
The goals of the PhenX Substance Use and Recovery WG were to:
- Identify and review well-established measurement protocols and instruments currently in use in the field
- Examine Substance Use and Recovery - related measurement protocols in the PhenX Toolkit to ensure that newly selected protocols complement existing Toolkit content
- Select up to 18 preliminary protocols to share with the research community and get feedback (community outreach)
- Suggest groups in the research community for the community outreach efforts
- Consider feedback from community outreach when deciding the high-priority Substance Use and Recovery protocols to be included in the Toolkit
- Present recommended protocols to the PhenX Steering Committee (SC) for approval
